PHILIPPE PETIT is interested in soundtracks; even if he creates original music he'd rather be introduced as a "musical travel agent" than a composer. PETIT uses a computer to build up electronic layers, process acoustic and field recordings. To second the machine he likes to move various glasses, or percussive objects, and take advantage of vinyl material to fondle released sounds. A journalist for various magazines and radio as well as a musical activist, PETIT has celebrated his 25th year of sharing his musical passions as the man behind the cult labels Pandemonium Rdz. and BiP_HOp. PETIT has assembled what people call a dream-team of collaborators, working with: Lydia Lunch, Foetus, Kumo, Scott McCloud (Girls Against Boys), Cosey Fanni Tutti, My Brightest Diamond, Sybarite, Pantaleimon, Graham Lewis (Wire), Barry Adamson, Scanner, Mira Calix, Kammerflimmer Kollektief, Guapo, Leafcutter John, Simon Fisher Turner, Justin Broadrick and many more... Aside his solo works, PETIT is active in Strings Of Consciousness, does a duo with Lydia Lunch, and his collab with James Johnston (Gallon Drunk/Bad Seeds/Faust) whose 3 are available LIVE : "I love to be onstage and when I play live I use Max MSP to process textures w/ my laptop (prepaired strings, various clicks & electro-acoustic or field recordings forming a tapestry of sound) to create a deep sound assemblage. Topping it all I play my prepaired vinyls. Assaulting turntables to take advantage of the vinyl material to fondle released sounds, raking the needle across the record's grooves, rubbing their stylus on paper, cardboard, metal to process unusual noises and textures… Headbutting... Dancing... Enjoying to perform and entertain my audience." PETIT has been working on soundtracks whose sound comes from the vibrations of one or several strings... Gathering contemporary/acoustic "stringed grandeur" with movements of masses of sound, filled with collected field-recordings, vanguard soundscapes, manipulations of glass and vinyls... Quite a few renowned instrumentists have recorded cello, strohviolin, viola, clarinet, electric harp, violin, piano, but also trumpet, tuba, saxophone, flutes, tibetan bowl, bells, vibraphone... These can be heard in his Philippe Petit & Friends series whose first CD "Silk-screened" was released on Trace Recordings. The second installment "A Scent Of Garmambrosia" is just released on Aagoo Rds. He tries to tell a story, develop an ear-thrillin' psycho-film-noir ambiance, invite you to share his world for a while. I edit and cut "sound-images", to process textures and their resonances into vertiginous travellings of tones ; conjuring up flashes of black & white grainy timbres, behind-the-sound close-ups, addictive stop-motion harmonic effects. In 2008 he celebrated 25 years of activism. He is still involved in music out of passion, and does the best he can to give original sounds some of the recognition they deserve thru his radio shows or articles. After all those years sharing his musical passions with as many listeners as possible, supporting the works of talented musicians + enjoying a few releases and doing music in groups; in 2009 he started to make his solo works available and also enrich them thru collaborations. In the works an album with ASVA, another one with Murcof, an album with Vultures, an album with Simon Fisher Turner, a DVD in collab with Raymond Salvatore Harmon + last but not least, a second installment in the duet with James Johnston, this time in hommage to glorious 50/60 Sci-Fi flicks... Mid August 2010 his picture-disc single with Cosey Fanni Tutti will be released on Dirter Promotions + "Off To Titan" a recontextualisation of Gustav Mahler first symphony is due on KARL Rds...
