Chain D.L.K. : The lights are out, tensions run high, you break a cold sweat... That is the image I get as 'Twist of Fate,' the collaborative effort of Lydia Lunch and Philippe Petit, begins to trickle down my ear canals. It is instantly eerie, with Petit providing dense textures and thick layers, creating an unsettlingly perfect bed for Lydia's occasionally melodic, always intense 'storytelling.' She does go back and forth every now and again, between spoken word and haunting singing, which surprisingly at times seems vaguely reminiscent of Ogre from Skinny Puppy's side project Ritalin. It's the second time in less than 12 months we've found Petit working with an (in)famous female vocalist, trailing last years chilling 7" with Cosey Fanni Tutti, and this outing is no less unnerving. 'Return To Backworld' is a sombre instrumental opener for piano and glitched electronics, before 'Requiescat' introduces Lydia's croaked vocal over droning, discordant strings and bleak, glooming drones. The centrepiece is surely the sumptuous ten minute composition 'Black Spring', entering a nether region of slowly waking symphonic strings and 4th world ambience woven around Lydia's dystopian narrative.
